Jim Cooney


Jim Cooney is an award-winning choreographer whose international body of work
encompasses television, stage, concerts, and events for both land and sea. His most
notable credits include ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition featuring Tony award
winner Kristin Chenoweth, both seasons of The Glee Project for Oxygen’s Upfront
Presentations, The Today Show featuring Little Richard, Pat Boone, and Didi Conn, The
Accused for Tropicana in Atlantic City which won Best Casino Show of the Year,
Tableaux for Holland America Line, Singin’ in the Rain which was nominated for a
Po’okela Award (Hawaiian State Theater Excellence) for Best Choreography, Associate
Choreographer of Guys and Dolls at Great Lakes Theater directed/choreographed by
Tony nominated Dan Knetchges, and assisting Tony nominated Randy Skinner on the
City Center production of Abby’s Song starring Paul Sorvino and the musical Ginger
starring Tony award winner Donna McKechnie. He’s also choreographed events,
commercials, and flash mobs for the likes of Warner Bros., OfficeMax, Tide, Oral-B, and
Glamour featuring celebrities such as Olympic gold medalist Nastia Liukin and Robbie
Rosen of American Idol.
Recent projects include choreographing for Broadway Bares at Hammerstein Ballroom,
BC Beat at Cielo nightclub, Associate Choreographer of WikiMusical featuring Brenda
Braxton for the New York Musical Theater Festival (Associate Choreographer)
directed/choreographed by Richard J.Hinds, and Nothing But Trash (Co-choreographer
with Greg Zane) which he is nominated for an Innovative Theater Award for Outstanding
Choreography/Movement. He’s currently the Artistic Director and Choreographer of
MASQ, an annual masquerade event featuring circus, dance, and burlesque, and
Creative Consultant for Unique New York Productions. His diverse choreographic voice
containing specialty skills such as tap, stage combat, aerial silks, body balancing, and
3-D motion capture.
Jim is on faculty at Broadway Dance Center (BDC) and was praised by The New York
Times for training dancers with “audition must haves: character, motivation, and
endurance.” He is proudly the faculty advisor of BDC’s Educational Programs.
Jim has also been the dance captain for eight productions including the first national
tour of Tony award winner Susan Stroman’s Broadway revival of The Music Man and
the original company of Nights on Broadway, directed and choreographed by Tony
award winner Andy Blankenbuehler and starring former Miss America Kate Shindle.
