Biography

Jim Cooney is an award-winning choreographer whose international body of work encompasses television, stage, concerts, and live events. His most notable credits include choreographing a Broadway style musical demolition for ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition featuring Tony award winner Kristin Chenoweth, both seasons of The Glee Project for Oxygen’s Upfront Presentations, The Today Show featuring Little Richard, Pat Boone, and Didi Conn, The Accused for Tropicana in Atlantic City which won Best Casino Show of the Year, Singin’ in the Rain which was nominated for a Po’okela Award (Hawaiian State Theater Excellence) for Best Choreography and assisting Tony nominated Randy Skinner on the City Center production of Abby’s Song starring Paul Sorvino and the musical Ginger starring Tony award winner Donna McKechnie. He’s also choreographed live events and flash mobs for the likes of Warner Brothers, Office Max, and Glamour Magazine featuring celebrities such as Olympic gold medalist Nastia Liukin and Robbie Rosen of American Idol. He’s currently the choreographer of the new musical Éramos Gays running in Salvador, Brazil and is the artistic director/choreographer of the new annual masquerade event MASQ which takes guests through several rooms of interactive acts of dance, circus, and burlesque. He has a diverse choreographic voice containing specialty skills such as tap, stage combat, aerial silks, and body balancing. Jim is on faculty at Broadway Dance Center (BDC) and was profiled by The New York Times in their Theater and Dance sections which praised him for training dancers with “audition must haves: character, motivation, and endurance.” He is proudly the faculty advisor of BDC’s Educational Programs. Jim has also been the dance captain for eight productions including the first national tour of Tony award winner Susan Stroman’s Broadway revival of The Music Man and the original company of Nights on Broadway, directed and choreographed by Tony award winner Andy Blankenbuehler and starring former Miss America Kate Shindle.
